Kindred Spirits became more than the name of the nightclub Marion E. Coleman founded in 1980. It also acted as a hub for Houston’s lesbian and gay community by hosting organizational meetings, fundraisers, and theatrical presentations.
The 1980s were pivotal in our community’s development. Kindred Spirits offered gay women and their friends a safe, uplifting atmosphere. Bolstered with new-found confidence and knowledge of strength in numbers, many of Kindred Spirits’ original patrons went on to become our community’s successful business, organization, and political leaders.
Even though the nightclub closed in 1989, this sense of community lived on. Many patrons urged Coleman to hold a reunion dance. The 2002 Reunion Celebration Dance began an annual event that continues today. Enjoyable events such as the Golf Tournament and Holiday Cabaret Sing-A-Long were added. The monies raised are donated to designated community charities.
In 2009, with an official 501(c)(3) designation, Kindred Spirits became a Foundation to continue the legacy of Kindred Spirits and its service to our community by enhancing women’s lives.
